I'll be honest, I have a history of negative experiences dining at River Rocks Restaurant.  I ate there three times within the first year and half that they opened and each dining experience was horrible. It was expensive for what you got, tasteless food and AWFUL service.

It has taken me a long time to go back....  But, I keep seeing all those cars lined up there to eat.  I think they must be doing something right, right??  I also hear mostly good reviews from people that have eaten there recently (although I still hear the occasional off the wall thing - like the mascarpone cheesecake from River Rocks. What is this a cheese-ball on a dinner plate? Mashed potatoes and butter?

Anyways, given all the recent positive comments, I thought it was time to give River Rocks another try.

River rocks is located right on the river and it is gorgeous!!  The restaurant is beautiful and the view is beautiful as well.  You can sit inside for a more formal experience or outside at "The Dock" for a casual experience.

My dining companion and I ate lunch outside at the dock.  We came in and were promptly seated and addressed by a server. The restaurant was fairly busy with a steady lunch crowd.  We each started with a glass of wine and a Caesar salad.  We also shared an order of peel-and-eat shrimp.

The peel and eat shrimp was fresh and delicious and exactly as it should be; served with lemon wedges and tasty cocktail sauce.   It was enjoyable. The Caesar salad was also very good! The dressing was creamy and delicious and was served with just the right amount of fresh croutons.  I love Caesar salad and I love how everywhere you go, it is made and tastes just a little bit different.

For entrees, my companion ordered the Grouper Reuben sandwich.  I ordered the Mahi with lobster butter with a side of green beans and rice pilaf.

The entrees both looked great when they arrived!

My Mahi plate was good.  The fish was cooked nicely and the lobster butter, while not quite lobster-y, was a good tasting herb butter.  The butter was served on the side, which I liked, because I could control the amount on the fish.  All of the food on the Mahi plate was generally under-seasoned, but it didn't bother me because I liked adding the salt and pepper to my tastes. The green beans were not as tender-crisp as I usually prefer (i.e. they were pretty well-cooked) but were good nonetheless.  The Mahi entree overall was light.  You have the option to pick light or heavy sides to go with it.  It would be a good option for someone watching their calories.  Overall, I was pleased with it and I would order it again.

I took a few bites of my companion's Grouper Reuben and it was nicely prepared.  I have had the River Reuben down the street at Captain Katanna's and it is a favorite of mine.  In my opinion, the River Reuben from Katanna's would be the hand's down winner in a taste-off between the two sandwiches, but the Grouper Ruben from River Rocks was still a good sandwich.  Overall, my dining companion was quite pleased with his meal.

Unlike my previous experiences, service that day at River Rocks was great...until we wanted the bill.  We waited quite a long time after we were finished eating to receive our bill.  Finally, the hostess checked on us and brought out our bill and let us pay him instead of our server.  It wasn't a big deal, but it is worth mentioning.

Out of my four dining experiences at River Rocks this was by far the best.  Was it amazing?  No.  But, it was enjoyable.  I think I am pretty comfortable going back to "The Dock" now.  Next time, I might get the courage try dining inside again.

How have your dining experiences been at River Rocks?
